About the Map:

Title: Bioshock

Date Created: April 2020

Background
For this map, I was tasked with creating a custom interactive base-map for a marketing campaign for the videogame Bioshock, which takes place in an underwater 20's inspired city. The specifications of the project were that the interactive be usable at a global, country, provincial, and local scale. However they did not require 1:1 accuracy as they prioritized the game's Art Deco aestheitic over geographic precision.

Description
For my map, I chose to have the countries be a darker shade of the color used for the oceans. This in turn allows for the countries to appear submerged under the ocean, just like the setting of the game. Deep beneath the waves however exists the Rapture, a place heavily inspired by the New York City architecture and Art Deco themes, where it's bright lights shine through the pitch darkness of the deep sea. To maintain that theme, I chose to have the boundaries at each scale be brightly lit to mimic those underwater glows. To actually enter the city from the ocean surface, one must enter a lighthouse that houses a submersible elevator within. To replicate that iconic lighthouse, I've gone ahead and marked each city on the map with a bright lighthouse to attract the user's eyes. Lastly, when you zoom in deep into the map, say on Manhattan for instance, you will see that the map adds another dimension where New York's skyline reaches up towards you. Feel free to explore the map yourself!
